SHRAVANA DWADASHI ON 17.3.2015 DWADASHI ON 18.3.2015 What is shravanopavasa? Shravanopavasa - When Shravana Nakshatra and Dwadashi falls - usually it falls on Bhadrapada Masa i.e., Vamana Jayanthi Day and in PhalguNa maasa. - As per Acharya Madhwa's Shri KrishnAmrutha MahArnava, to have shravanOpavAsa, all these four conditions listed below have to be true. :- Upavaasa on Dwadashi can happen in two circumstances. When Ekadashi has "viddha" and on dwadashi day, "shravana nakShatra" is there in both the cases fasting to be done on dwadashi day.
shravana shall be there upto madhyaahna In aruNOdayakaala it shall be abhijit sparsharahita But while determining "madhyaahna", "abhijit" - there is maTa bedha., and as such thee is some difference between different Mutts. But this time all the Mutts - Uttaradimutt, Vyasarajamutt, Sripadaraja Mutt, Rayara Mutt, etc.. are following shravana upavaasa on 17.03.2015 As such, Ekadaashi shall be observed both on 16.3.2015 and 17.3.2015 and Dwadashi shall be on 18.3.2015 uttaraaShaaDhakaNikaa kalaa yaavanna dRushyatE | saa jayaMtI parityaajyaa shunaa sprUShTaM haviryathaa | uttaraaShaaDhamilitashravaNadvaadashIvrataM | suraabiMdubhiraasiktatIrthavachChObhayaM tyajEt | dvaadashIshravaNOpEtaa abhijit sparshasaMyutaa | aruNOdayakaalE tu naivOpOShyaa manIShibhi : | (kUrmavachana| aruNOdayavElaayaaM abhijit sparshanaM yadi | shrINaa chEt shaShTiGaTikaa nOpOShyaa viShNutatparai: | (dharmasaMhitaa| 'Condition 1. The shravana naxatra should not have contact with Uttarashada naxatra on this day. UttarAshAda is present at Sunrise and ShravaNa. Condition 2. The shravana naxatra should have contact with Dhanista naxatara on this day. Condition 3. The Shravana naxatra should be present at Sunrise time. Condition 4. The sravana naxatra should be running through the afternoon on this day. On this day, ie., 17.3.2015 - on Dwadashi day - Shravana Nakshatra is there - wherever Dwadashi tithi is there upto 5 hours after Suryodaya Many people have been asking about the Shravanopavasa on 17.3.2014 As such, I have tried to clarify based on ShravaNopavaasa. "ShravaNa" should be madhyaahna vyaapini. During arunodaya kaala it shall have abhijit sparsharahita. Here, in the words "madhyaahna", "abhijit" there are different interpretations amongst different Mutts. As such, there may be some difference in observing fasting. Question - If you observe shravana dwadashi upavaasa, there will be two upavaasaas. As such, you will not be observing "paaraNe" on dwadashi. Does it not amount to vratha bhanga? Answer - No. Both for dwadashi and shravana nakshatra, the devate is Vishnu only. As such, non observance of paarane will not amount to vratha bhanga. On Dwadashi day there are two instances of observing fasting. Once when dashami it is "dashami viddha" dwadashi fasting to be done. Similarly on Dwadashi day if it has "shravana"nakshatra, also it should be observed as fasting day. Importance of Ekadashi – 1. According to Mahabharatha Shanti parva – Ekadashi is compared most valuable than Ahimsa, Satyavachana, Daana and indriya nigraha. 2. Kashi/Gaya/Gangasnaana/Kurukshetra darshana – nothing is superior to Ekadashi. 3. Thousands of Ashwamedha Yaga is not even equal to 1/16of Ekadashi. 4. Thousands of Grahana Parvakala, thousands of Vyatipata Yoga, is not even equal to 1/16 of Ekadashi phala. 5.. By doing Ekadashi upavaasa, janmaantara sins also will be removed 6. By doing Ekadashi Pancha karmendriya and pancha jnaanendriyagalu all will have purity 7. On Ekadashi day – there are some exceptions for Pregnants, aged above 80 years, and children below 8 years, and those who are suffering from diseases. – That too they can take food to a maximum of 1/4 of what they used to take on other days. 8. On Ekadashi day if we eat or if we tell some body to eat – he will get “naraka loka”. 9. Even during Soothaka, Rajaswala dosha, – one has to perform Ekadashi 10. Apart from doing Ekadashi, we have to perform Dwadashi paarane also in time. If we do Ekadashi and does bhojana late on Dwadashi day, we will not get for having done Ekadashi. King Rukmaangada, King Ambarisha, Sage Durvasa, and all Vaidhika mathacharyas have demonstrated the greatness and power of observing EkAdasi Vratha.. Please note : In Ambarisha Durvasa Maharshi Story about ekadashi, it ppears that Durvasu was ignorant of Ekadashi Mahatwa. But he was well aware of Ekadashi. He behaved like just to show the importance of Haridina – Dashami, Ekadashi and Dwadashi, as per the instructions of Srihari only. Ambarisha is definitely inferior to Durvasa Rushigalu. Please note : There are many devotees of Rayaru who are doing one time fasting or one phalahara on Thursday. But Rayaru has never told us to fasting or one time bhojana on Thursday. It is only their belief and with due respect to Rayaru we are doing like this. But if u r doing fasting/half fasting on Thursday and not doing Ekadashi – Rayaru will never be pleased. Instead he will curse us. As such All Ekadashi Fasting is a must for ALL Source - Sri Krishnamruta MaharNava (vyakyaana by Sri Vyasanakere Prabhanjanacharya) Narahari Sumadhwa
