Ekadashi upavasais on Thursday September 24th and Dwadashi parane is onafter local sunrise.
Significance: This special & interesting ekadashi called as Vaman Ekadashi, Parsava Parivartini Ekadashi and Jaljhlini Ekadashi. Sri Hari is worshipped as Vaman roopi vishnu. The name of this Ekadashi varies from region to region. But the legend associated with this Ekadashi remains the same. It is said that Lord Vishnu who is sleeping during the Chaturmas period changes his sleep position on this Ekadashi day ( from left to right?? ) . Hence the name parivarthini. On Dwadashi day it is Vaman Jayanthi, hence the name Vaman ekadashi. After deva pooja parivarthana Uthsava is performed on this day. Special poojas are offered throughout this period. In Nepal's Budhanilkantha Temple, where 15 feet murthy of Sri Hari is in yoga nidra form and in the middle of a 40 feet tank, this day is a very special day. Please note from purana story how kings in those days dared to differ and question counselors respectfully and they were duly appreciated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budhanilkantha_Temple Practice: Bhadrapad Shukla dwadashi day people invite learned brahmanas and feed them with food especially "yogurt/curd" rice "mosaranna". They donate pots filled with curd rice to elders and learned people. They also donate new pot filled with water, covered with clothes (vastra), along with shoes and umbrella to a deserving brahmana. Prayer: vaasudeva jagannatha praapthEyaM dwAdashi tava | paarshvEna parivartasvasukhaM svapihi maadhava || Story from Puran: Conversation between Yudhistira and Sri Krishna regarding this special ekadashi in the month of Bhadrapad. Sri Krishna recollects conversation between chatrumukha Brahma and Narada. Brahma explains the story to Narada, Long time agao there was a just, brave and truthful emperor named Maandhata. He was a rajarishi. He took care of his subjects like his own children. There was no famine or any kind of natural disasters in his kingdom. All people were busy doing their chore per their varnashramas in the seva of Hari and vayu. People were happy with lots of shardha and bhakti. However after a long time because of king's past karmas, the kingdom didn't see any rainfall for three years. There was a big famine and all the subjects faced lots of diffculty and approached the King. They requested the king to do something so that they can get some rain. The king understood the peoples problems and thus went to the forests in search of a solution. There in the deep forests he saw the ashram of direct descendent of Brahma, Angirasa Rishi. King Maandhta paid his respects to the rishi and the rishi welcomed him to his ashram and asked him for the reasons for coming so deep into the forests. King Maandhata said though I am ruling my kingdom as per the shastras and dharma, there is terrible famine in my kingdom. I don't know the reason for this, can you please help me.Rishi Angirasa replied that this is kritayuga, people in this yug are righteous people and stick to their dharma. However in this yug there is a shudra who is doing tapsya in your kingdom and that is why there are no rains. Please get rid of him.King Maandhata said Dear RIshi, what if he is a Shudra, he is only doing tapsya. Everyone has the right to do tapsya, so what is wrong with him doing it? He has not doing anything wrong and it would be unjust for me to punish him. Can you please suggest an alternative solution?Muni Agnirasa was pleased with Kings's question and his awareness of justice. He replied please practice ekadashi vrat on Bhadrapad Shukla ekadashi day. This will solve allthe problems you and your kingdom are facing. This is a sarva siddhi ekadashi. Everyone in the kingdom should do it.King Maandhata came back to the kingdom. On the bhadrapad shukla ekadashi he practiced the ekadashi. Everyone in his kingdom irrespective of their varna and ashrama practiced this vrat for the sake of the kingdom. The kingdom had wonderful rains and there was overflow of wealth and happiness through out the kingdom for years to come. namO namaste gOvinda budha shravNa sanjyaka | aghagh sankshayam kratvA sarva soukhya pradObhava || bhukti mukti pradashaiva lOkaanaaM sukhadayaka | from part-3 uttarkhanda 58th chapter of padma puran. 1. Who is Ganesha or Vinayaka or Ganapathi?- Ganesha is the son of Parvathi – Parameshwara. Vinayaka is the abhimani devata for akaasa (space or sky) – bhootakaasha. He has Mooshika as his vaahana, he has modaka in his hands, We have to worship Ganapathi as the Srihari’s parivara devate. We must never worship him as supreme.2. What is the kakshya of Vinayaka?Ganapathi is in the 18th Kakshya alongwith Vishwaksena, Sheshashatastaru, Kubera, and Ashwini Devategalu. Ganapathi was born as “Charudeshna”, the son of Krishna-Rukmini. It is said that Parvathi got Ganapathi out of her body’s mud. Is it without the knowledge of Rudra?As per Skanda Purana (Tamasa purana) Parvathi got son out of her body’s mud. But we must not take the story as it is. It gives a wrong picture on Parvathi. When Parvathi created Ganesha out of her body’s mud, does it mean that she had lot of mud in her body, how that much of mud can come to her. When she was born as “Sati”, the daughter of Daksha prajapathi, she had created fire (agni) out of her body and entered fire. She only took out some portion of Pruthvi amsha out of her body. Parvathi she herself cannot create a son. She cannot by herself can give birth to a child. A Woman without the support and anugraha of a Purusha, cannot produce a child and such things are not found anywhere. We must understand that Parvathi created Vinayaka only out of the grace, anugraha, and support of her husband Rudra, but not of her own power. Sri Jagannathadasaru says “”ಪಿನಾಕಿ ಭಾರ್ಯಾತನುಜ ಮೃದ್ಭವ” (pinaki bhaaryatanuja mrudbhava”. As per Brahma Vaivartha Purana (Rajasa purana)– the birth of Ganesha is different – It goes on like this. :-Parvathi wanted to have a child and did the penance to Srihari, who blessed her with her desire.Once Shiva – Parvathi were together (in ekaantha) and Shiva was about to discharge his Veerya in her. By that time some sages came and sought Bhiksha. Parvathi left Shiva in the middle and went to arrange for the Bhiksha of the sages. In the meantime, the Veerya in Shiva which should have been deposited in Parvathi fell on the ground, and a handsome boy was born. That boy was none other than Ganapathi. So, Ganapathi was born with the anugraha of Shiva only.Note – Here both the puranaas are written by Sri Vedavyasaru only, one is a tamasa purana and the other a rajasa purana. The Skanda purana on Ganapathi seems to be mohaka purana.4. How Vinayaka got the head of the elephant?Here also two versions – As per Skanda Purana – which is a famous story – Parvathi went to take bath and installed Ganapathi as the security. Shiva came with thirsty and was about to enter the house, whom Ganapathi stopped. Shiva out of anger, removed the head of Ganapathi. When Parvathi came out she saw the dead son and begged Shiva to give life to him. Shiva in turn, then realised that Ganapathi was his son only, and ordered his servants to bring the head of anyone who is lying with the head towards North Direction. The servants saw no one sleeping with head towards North and found an elephant sleeping so. They cut off the head of that elephant and gave it to Shiva, who placed on the body of Ganapathi and brought back to life.As per Brahma Vaivartha Purana – it is a different story – Ganapathy was very handsome. All gods, Rushees, Munees wanted to have his darshana. Everybody came there to Kailasa to have his darshana and were praising the Gananayaka. Parvathi was very much happy at her son. After all gods came, Shanaischara, who had come to Kailasa was hesitating to see Ganapathy and was sitting out. Parvathi realizing this asked Shani to come and have the darshana of Ganapathy. Shani told that he had a curse from his wife that if he sees anybody directly his head would be cut off. (Once Shani was doing Dhyana. At that time his wife, daughter of Chitraratha, came in front of him, but Shani who was in dhyana did not see her at all. So she cursed him that whoever he sees directly would get his head cut off).Parvathi compels Shani to see Ganapathy, which he agreed and sees him. As soon as he saw him directly, Ganapathy’s face was cut. Parvathi now repented for having forced Shani to see his son and she was crying. As such Ganapathy lost his head.Parvathi prayed Srihari who immediately rushed there. Srihari went and removed the head of an elephant which was sleeping head faced towards North. Acharya Madhwa in his Maandookopanishat Bhashya has written – Sri Ganesha is the aradhaka of Vishwa Taijasa roopa. Both are are Jaagrat and Svapnavaste niyamaka roopa. – i.e., Vishvambara roopa. It has 19 heads. The Central face is Gajamukha, whereas the other 18 faces are human and other faces. Ganesha was doing the chintana of “Vishvambara roopa” of Srihari. As such, he got the Gajamukha.5 . Why Srihari brought the head of the elephant and placed it on Ganapathy -As per Brahma Vaivartha Purana –Once Doorvasa sage gave the nirmalya of Srihari to Indra, the god of Heaven. Indra in turn put it on the head of the elephant, which threw and touched with its legs. As such, having neglected Nirmalya of Srihari Indra got so many problems and he had to loose his power also. Ultimately after Samudra Mathana, after getting Amrutha, Devendra got back his power. Here, that elephant which touched the nirmalya of Srihari with its legs got the sin. As such, it had to be punished. Srihari removed the head of that elephant and placed it on Ganapathy. Further, that elephant was lucky to have the sparsha of Harinivedita nirmalya and as such, its head could become the head of Ganapathy.6. Naming ceremony of Ganapathy – Parvathi requested Srihari to name the child – So, Srihari himself gave 8 names –
9. Why we must not see Chandra on Bhadrapada Shudda Chaturthi –As already informed once Ganapathy was sitting on his chariot rat (mooshika Vahana Ganapathy) after eating heavy food on Bhadrapada Shudda Chaturthi. The rat saw a snake passing nearby and the rat become unconscious on seeing the snake and fell down. Ganesha sitting on the rat fell down on the ground. The sweet balls which Ganesha had in his hand fell on the ground and Ganesha took it and put them again in his belly. Ganesha took the snake which was moving and tied to his belly as a belt. Seeing the mischievous actions of Ganesha, Chandra laughed in the sky. Ganesha felt it as disrespect to him by Chandra, and cursed him that “no one shall see Chandra in future”. With this Chandra repented and came down and did the prarthana to Ganesha for pardon.Note – Chandra is in the 12th Kakshya whereas Ganapathi is in the 18th Kakshya. How can he accept the curse by Ganapathi? – Chandra on being hit by Ganesha, understood and saw that it is not mere Ganesha, but actually paramathma, the Vishwambara roopa of Srihari and sought apology from paramathma present in Ganesha. Then Ganesha was convinced and reduced the curse that Chandra should decrease day by day in Krishna paksha. Further, let no one shall see Chandra on Bhadrapada Shudda Chaturthi day and that who ever see Chandra shall have “mistake or misunderstanding and shall have some blame”. ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕೋಪಾಖ್ಯಾನ – ನೈಮಿಷಾರಣ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಸೂತಪುರಾಣಿಕರನ್ನು ಶೌನಕಾದಿಗಳು ಗಣಪತಿಯ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು – ಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣಪರಮಾತ್ಮನೇ ತನಗೆ ಬಂದ ಅಪವಾದವನ್ನು ಪರಿಹರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಈ ವ್ರಥವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದನೆಂದರು. ಆಗ ಶೌನಕರು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ – ಜಗನ್ನಿಯಾಮಕನಾದ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಅಪವಾದವೇ? ಅದು ಹೇಗೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯ? ಅದನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿ ಹೇಳಲು ಬಯಸಿದಾಗ ಸೂತರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ -ಭಾದ್ರಪದ ಚತುರ್ಥಿಯಂದು ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ನನು ಚಂದ್ರದರ್ಶನವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕ ಮಣಿಗಳ್ಳನೆಂಬ ಅಪಖ್ಯಾತಿಗೆ ಗುರಿಯಾದನು.ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದೇವರು ಗಣಪತಿಗೆ ಅಣಿಮಾದಿ ಅಷ್ಟಸಿದ್ಧಿಗಳನ್ನೂ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಅನುಗ್ರಹೀತನಾದ ಗಣಪತಿಯು ಸತ್ಯಲೋಕದಿಂದ ಚಂದ್ರಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ಎಡವಿ ಬಿದ್ದನು. ಇದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಚಂದ್ರನು ಅಪಹಾಸ್ಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ನಕ್ಕನು. ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ತಾನೇ ಅತಿ ಸುಂದರನೆಂಬ ಅಹಂಕಾರವೂ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಈ ಅಪಹಾಸ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಗಣಪತಿಯು ಕುಪಿತನಾಗಿ ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ಶಾಪವಿತ್ತನು “ನೀನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರನೆಂಬ ಅಹಂಕಾರದಿಂದ ನನಗೆ ಅಪಹಾಸ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿರುವೆ. ಇಂದಿನಿಂದ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಜನರು ನೋಡುವುದೇ ಬೇಡ, ಅಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸುಳ್ಳು ಅಪವಾದ ಬರಲಿ” ಎಂದು. ಆಗ ತನ್ನ ತಪ್ಪಿಗೆ ಪಶ್ಚಾತಾಪಗೊಂಡ ಚಂದ್ರನು ಗಣಪತಿಯನ್ನು ಸ್ತುತಿಸಿದನು - ಪ್ರಸೀದ ದೇವೇಶ ಜಗನ್ನಿವಾಸ ಗಣೇಶ ಲಂಬೋದರ ವಕ್ರತುಂಡ | ವಿರಿಂಚಿ ನಾರಾಯಣ ಪೂಜ್ಯಮಾನ ಕ್ಷಮಸ್ವ ಮೇ ಗರ್ವಕೃತಂ ಚ ಹಾಸ್ಯಂ | ಆಗ ಸಂತುಷ್ಟನಾದ ಗಣಪತಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಶಾಪವನ್ನು ಸಂಕುಚಿತಗೊಳಿಸಿದನು – “ಯಾರು ಚಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ಗಣಪತಿಯ ದಿನವಾದ ಭಾದ್ರಪದ ಶುದ್ಧ ಚತುರ್ಥಿಯಂದು ನೋಡುತ್ತಾರೋ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಮಿಥ್ಯಾಪವಾದ ಬರಲಿ. ಬೇರೆ ದಿನ ನೋಡಲಡ್ಡಿಯಿಲ್ಲ”.ಅಥವಾ ಭಾದ್ರಪದ ಶುದ್ಧ ದ್ವಿತೀಯದಂದು ಬಿದಿಗೆ ಚಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೂ ಕೂಡ ಆ ಅಪವಾದದಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತಿಯಿದೆ.ಭಾದ್ರಪದ ಶುದ್ಧ ಚತುರ್ಥಿಯಂದು ಚಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಅಪವಾದ ತಪ್ಪದು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಚಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ, ಅದರ ಪರಿಹಾರಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಪಠಿಸಿದರೆ , ಅಪವಾದದಿಂದ ಪರಿಹಾರವಾಗುವುದೆಂದು ವರವಿದೆ.ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನ ಭಕ್ತನಾದ ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಸೂರ್ಯಮಂಡಲಾಂತರ್ಗತನಾದ ಸೂರ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣನನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿ, ಅವನಿಂದ ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕಮಣಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದನು. ಸೂರ್ಯನು ಆ ಮಣಿಯನ್ನು ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತನಿಗೆ ಕರುಣಿಸುವಾಗ ಅಶುಚಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದು ಒಲಿಯದೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದನು. ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತನು ವಿಷ್ಣುಭಕ್ತನಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಲೋಭತನವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನ ಲೋಭತನವನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸಲೆಂದೇ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ನನು ತನಗೆ ಆ ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕ ಮಣಿ ಬೇಕೆಂದು ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಅವನು ಅದನ್ನು ಕೊಡದೆ ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರನಾದ ಪ್ರಸೇನನಿಗೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದನು. ಪ್ರಸೇನನಾದರೋ ತಾನು ಭೇಟೆಯಾಡಲು ಹೋದಾಗ ಅಶುಚಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅದನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿದ್ದನು. ಆಗ ಒಂದು ಸಿಂಹವು ಪ್ರಸೇನನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದು ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕಮಣಿಯನ್ನು ಕಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಗ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಂಬವಂತನೆಂಬ ಕರಡಿಯು ಆ ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನು ಕೊಂದು ಮಣಿಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಗಳ ಉಯ್ಯಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿದನು.ಅಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತನಾದರೋ ತನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮನು ವಾಪಸ್ಸು ಬರದಿರುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ, ಹಿಂದೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣನು ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕಮಣಿಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದುದರಿಂದ ಅವನೇ ಈಗ ತನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದು ಅಪಹರಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆಂದೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಡೆ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಕೃಷ್ಣನಾದರೋ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಭಾದ್ರಪದ ಶುದ್ಧ ಚತುರ್ಥಿಯಂದು ಚಂದ್ರದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದನು. ಸರ್ವದೋಷದೂರನಾದ, ಸಕಲರಿಗೂ ನಿಯಾಮಕನಾದ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಅಪವಾದವೇ? ಇಲ್ಲ. ತಾನೇ ಗಣಪತಿಯ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಸತ್ಯವಾಗಿಸಲು, ಜಗನ್ನಾಟಕ ಸೂತ್ರದಾರಿಯಾದ ತಾನೇ ಲೋಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷನಾರ್ಥ ಅಪವಾದವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದನು. ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಪರಿಹಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕವನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೊರಟನು. ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಂಹದಿಂದ ಹತನಾದ ಪ್ರಸೇನನನ್ನೂ, ಕರಡಿಯಿಂದ ಹತವಾದ ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನೂ ನೋಡಿ, ಕರಡಿಯ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಗುರುತು ಹಿಡಿದು ಗುಹೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದನು. ಗುಹೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾಂಬವಂತನ ಮಗಳಾದ ಜಾಂಬವತಿಯು ಆ ತೊಟ್ಟಿಲಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಮಗುವಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು -ಸಿಂಹ: ಪ್ರಸೇನಮವಧೀತ್, ಸಿಂಹೋ ಜಾಂಬವತಾ: ಹತ: |ಸುಕುಮಾರಕ ಮಾ ರೋದೀ: ತವ ಹ್ಯೇಷ: ಸ್ಯಮಂತಕ: ||ಅರ್ಥ – ಸಿಂಹವು ಪ್ರಸೇನನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದಿತು, ಸಿಂಹವನ್ನು ಜಾಂಬವಂತನೆಂಬ ಕರಡಿಯು ಸಂಹರಿಸಿತು. ಹೇ ಸುಕುಮಾರ ಅಳಬೇಡ, ಈ ಸ್ಯಮಂಟಕಮಣಿಯು ನಿನಗಾಗಿ ಜಾಂಬವಂತನಿಂದ ತರಲಗಿದೆ. ಎಂದು ಹಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು. ಗುಹಾಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿದ ಕೃಷ್ಣನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಜಾಂಬವತಿಯು ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಕಿರುಚಿದಳು. ಆಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಜಾಂಬವಂತನು ಕೃಷ್ನನೊಂದಿ ೨೮ ದಿನಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಯುದ್ಧಮಾಡಿದನು. Worshipping of Ganapathy as Sarvottama is wrong –Vinayaka is the son of Rudra. For those who have tamasa gunas, Vinayaka in order to make them to a fierceful states, makes them to do Sankashti Vratha, and gives sukha, which is the reason for hell later. Some people are performing Sankashti Vratha on every Krishna Paksha Chaturthi day. Ganesha blesses them fully or partially and then pushes them to hell. Because those who perform such vratas are basically tamasic souls. Because – They pray that Ganapathy is Sarvottama. They prey that Ganapathi is the Creater, protector and destroyer, etc. As such, Madhwas are not supposed to do Sankashti Vratha.11. gaNaanaam pati: = dEvagaNaanaam pati: = hari: = Actually the word “Ganapathy” means Srihari only. All Vedaas, all shabdhaas, vaakyaas, whether pourusheya or apouresheya, all speak, sing only the glorious of Srihari only.12. Worshipping of Ganapathy by greater gods :
16. Worshipping of Ganapathi in streets - Worshipping of Ganesha is a devata kaarya. Now a days, it has become a trend to worship Ganapathi everywhere on the streets. We are following westernised culture in many issues, but atleast in worshipping Gods, let us follow Hindu culture. The people collects money from the friends, and in many cases they goes to all houses to collect funds for Ganesha pooja, pools the money and installs Ganapathi. The idol is worshipped with various flowers, and other decorative items. The people enjoys by dancing, singing arranging Orchestra, and tries to get the blessings of Ganapathi. In many cases, the people are drinking alcohal and dancing. Whether he blesses them or curses them is not known. In the earlier days, the pooja of Ganapathi was done with devaranamas, sankeerthanas, keerthanaas, archanaas. Now it is being done with irrelevant and irritating dance tunes, how can Ganesha be pleased? Atleast we, Madhwas should not involve in such an act. We must avoid participating in such dances on Ganesha festival. During the period, we can hold Harikatha, upanyaasa, bhajan, yakshagaana, pouranika dramaas, etc., and uphold our Hindu Tradition.17. Worshipping of Ganapathi of different shapes - Ganapathi has a definite shape. Now a days, the people are creating idols of Ganapathi with innovative ideas. They are creating Ganapathi in the form of Veerappan, in the form of Narendra Modi, in the form of Saibaba, in the form of Ayyappa, etc…… This is definitely against the culture and Ganapathi will never be please and he will curse instead of blessing. Ganapathi has to be worshipped in his kakshya only shastra reethya, but if one is worshipping him in the form of Modi, Ayyappa or Saibaba or others, we are degrading him, which would result in Navavidha dwesha. There are some section of people who worship him as Sarvottama, which is also against the principle. He must be worshipped as the Ganapathi with Parvathipathi Shivantargatha Bharathiramana Mukyapraanaantargata Vishwambara MurthiyE namaha only. Sadhane dwadashi. Significance: This is a special ekadashi in the krishna Paksha of the month of shravan. This ekadashi is populalry known as Aja ekadashi. Any person who fasts completely on this day and worships Hrsikesa, the master of the senses, becomes free of all reactions to his sins. Even one who simply hears about this Ekadasi is freed from his past sins. Its very clear again that Ekadashi vrata is to be practiced by followers of RudraDevaru too,from the story of Raja Satya Harishchandra,we hear from the Purana. On this day Janardana roopi Sri Hari is worshipped by chanting Sri VishnuShasranama. Note: I sincerely request on this special ekadashi day, let us all remember and pay our respects to Shri Pandhareenathachar Galagali who passed away August 29th (poornima) at 11-15pm. A scholar/Orator of extraordinary caliber with original works and translations in Sanskrit and Kannada, he has been called Abhinava bana Bhatta and compared to kalidasa for his poetry. more importantly his contributions to dvaita philosophy and overall Indian philosophy is indeed priceless. Mahamahopadhyaya Pandit Galagali was recipient of numerous titles and accolades. Please go over the wiki pedia link for information and articles on him. On a personal note, I have used his Kannada translations of the Puranas to fix/update both significance and story sections of my ekadashi emails. I will be ever grateful to him for making the puranas easier for people like me to read, understand and share. I join you all in praying Shri Lakshmi Narashima to bless his soul and give strength to his family, friends and countless students. Story from Puran: "There once lived a famous king named Hariscandra, who was the emperor of the world, a great shiva bhakta and a person of great truth and integrity. His wife's name was Candramati, and he had a son named Lohitasva. By the force of destiny, however, Hariscandra lost his great kingdom and sold his wife and son. The pious king himself became a menial servant of a dogeater, who made him guard a crematorium. Yet even while doing such menial service, he did not forsake his truthfulness and good character, just as soma-rasa, even when mixed with some other liquid, does not lose its ability to bestow immortality. "The king passed many years in this condition. Then one day he sadly thought, `What shall I do? Where should I go? How can I be delivered from this plight?' In this way he drowned in an ocean of anxiety and sorrow. "One day a great sage happened by, and when the king saw him he happily thought, 'Ah, Lord Brahma has created brahmanas just to help others.' Hari6candra paid his respectful obeisances to the sage, whose name was Gautama Muni. With joined palms the king stood before Gautama and narrated his pitiful story. Gautama Muni was astonished to hear the king's tale of woe. He thought, `How has this mighty king been reduced to collecting clothes from the dead!' Gautama became very compassionate toward Hariscandra and instructed him on the process of fasting for purification. "Gautama Muni said, '0 king, during the dark fortnight of the month of Shravana there occurs an especially meritorious Ekadasi named Aja, which removes all sins. Indeed, this Ekadasi is so auspicious that if you simply fast on that day and perform no other austerity, all your sins will be nullified. By your good fortune it is coming in just seven days. So I urge you to fast on this day and remain awake through the night. If you do so, all the reactions of your past sins will come to an end. 0 Hariscandra, I have come here because of your past pious deeds. Now, all good fortune to you in the future!' So saying, the great sage Gautama immediately disappeared. "King Hariscandra followed Gautama's instructions concerning fasting on the sacred day of Aja Ekadasi. O Yudhisthira, because the king fasted on that day, the reactions to his sins were completely destroyed at once. 0 lion among kings, just see the influence of this Ekadasi fast! It immediately vanquishes whatever miseries one may be suffering as a result of past sinful activities. Thus all Hariscandra's miseries were relieved. Just by the power of this wonderful Ekadasi, he was reunited with his wife and son, who had died but were now revived. In heaven the demigods began beating their celestial kettledrums and showering down flowers upon Hariscandra, his queen, and his son. By the blessings of the Ekadasi fast, he regained his kingdom without difficulty. Moreover, when King Hariscandra left this planet, his relatives and all his subjects went with him to the spiritual world. "0 Pandava, whoever fasts on Aja Ekadasi is surely freed from all his sins and ascends to the spiritual world. And whoever hears and studies the glories of this Ekadasi achieves the merit gained by performing a horse sacrifice."
