What is Bali Padyami?
Bali Padyami falls on Karthika Shudda Padya. This day is reserved for Bali Chakravarthi. It is the day on which Bali Chakravarthi will be the Chakravarthi for the entire world. It is the day on which Vamana roopi Srihari pushed Bali Chakravarthi to sutala loka. This is the boon given by Vamanaroopi paramathma after the nigraha of Bali. Vamana also gave the boon that “Karthika Shudda paadya day will be reserved for Bali Chakravarthi. On this day whatever daanaas given like Godaana, vastradaana, bhoodaana and other daanaas will please Vamana” “Deepa Prajvalana on this day will make Lakshmidevi to stay in their house” Who is Bali Chakravarthi? Bali Chakravarthi is the great grand son of Prahladaraja and the son of Virochana. His real name is Indrasena. Born in the daithyakula of Hiranyakashipu, he was the daithya chakravarthi. Even though he was a daithya, he ruled the state with proper dharmaniste and he was an expert in giving daanaas. Bali Chakravarthi led the Daithya team during Samudra mathana. He will become Indra in Saavarni manvantra. Story as per Skanda purana (Reva khanda) – In his previous janma, he was a business man and was fond of women and was always wasting his time with various prostitute women. He had never done any punya kaarya at all. But during his last stages, he gave the daana of whatever he had with him to various brahmins. He died and the yama doothaas took him to Yamaloka. There, Chitragupta opened his file and submitted before Yamadharmaraaja. His file was fully covered with sins only. Yama Dharma verified the file and surprised to note that he had the punya of daana at his last stage. He had the punya of becoming Indra for 3 muhurthas. Yamadharma asked Indrasena as to whether he intends to use the punya first or the paapa first. Punya phala to become the Indra. He opted for Indra’s throne for 3 muhurthas. Yama Dharma agreed and asked Indra to give the throne for 3 muhurthas to Indrasena. After sitting in the throne for a very short time, he gave the daana whatever available in Indraloka to Vasistaru, Vishwamitraru, etc. This punya of giving daana at Indraloka ensured that all his sins were destroyed and he was eligible for Indra throne. As such, he was born as the son of Virochana and got the throne of Daithya vamsha. Finally with the anugraha of Vamana he was eligible for Indra throne, which he would get in Saavarni manvantra. Bali Chakravarthi’s son is Baanasura, another daithya. He had thousand arms, he was a follower of Shiva. Banasura had a boon from Shiva to fight with Krishna and was killed by Krishna. Why is Bali Chakravarthi in Paataala loka ? Bali Chakravarthi had the control of the entire world and he had occupied all the kingdoms and occupied the Devaloka also by pushing out Devendra. He wanted to be the Indra. For getting the throne of Indra, one must do atleast 100 Ashwamedha Yajna. He had completed 99 Ashwamedha Yaagaas, and was doing the 100th. He was doing the Yajna under the pourohitya of Shukracharyaru, who is the daithya guru. Indra (Purandara named Indra) approached Srihari and sought his help. At the same time, Aditi, the mother of Devates asked her husband Kashyapa Rushigalu to protect gods from Balichakravarthi. So, both Aditi-Kashyapas approached Srihari for help. Srihari decided to born as their son “Vamana” for the nigraha of the daithya. Bali was in the finishing stage of his Yajna. Vamana came to the place of Yajna. On seeing the handsome, attractive young brahmachari, Vamana, Bali stood and did the paada prakshalana of Vamana and asked him as to what he wants – a beautiful girl, kingdom, or ornaments, etc. Vamana said that he does not require anything, except 3 steps of land. Shukracharya, the daithya guru, warned Bali Chakravarthi and told him not to accede to Vamana’s request. But Bali went ahead for the daana of the 3 steps to Vamana. Getting angry at Bali, Shukracharya cursed him that Bali shall loose all his kingdom. Bali Chakravarthi did the sankalpa and started giving the three steps to Vamana. Vamana extended himself to be that of Trivikrama to extend to the entire world from his very first step itself. From the second step he occupied the atala, vitala, sutala, patala lokaas also. For the third step, there was no place. He is said to have been bounded with the ropes of Varuna by Garuda since Vamana could not place his foot anywhere on the earth and Bali offered his head itself and asked Trivikrama Vamana to keep his leg on his head.Brahma then asks Vamana to release Bali and Vamana keeping his Vishnu paada which has the Ganga sannidhana, pushed him down to earth to Paataala loka, and even today he is guarding him in his Upendra Roopa. Bali Chakravarthi will be the next Indra in the coming Manvantara. Bali Padyama half Muhurtha – There are 3½ muhurthaas which are termed as Good Muhurthaas. They are Vijayadashami, Ugadi and Akshaya Triteeya which are full day muhurthaas, whereas Bali Padyami is termed as Half Muhurthaas (for the first half day). On this day, we need not look at the panchanga for taaraabala, chandrabala, for the shubhakarya. Whatever good works done on this day will fetch more punya. On this day also we have to do tailabhyanjana snaana. Balipoojakrama – He was also given the boon that he will be allowed to rule the entire universe for one day in a year and on that day he can visit the earth, which is the Balipadyami day – the Kaarthika Shudda Padya. We have to sketch the Balichakravarthi’s figure in rangoli or Gomaya. Then we have to invite Bali. We have to put curds in front of Bali. Ladies will enter the house, by pouring milk from outside, which is a method of inviting Lakshmi. JalapoorNa trayodashi – Click for sri Satyatma Tirtha’s sandesha (given during 2012 chaturmasya) This is done on Ashwayuja Krishna trayOdashi. This is popularly called as ನೀರು ತುಂಬುವ ಹಬ್ಬ (neeru tuMbuva habba). On Ashwayuja Krishna trayOdashi, we have to do the gangaapooja. We have to clean the haMDe (ಹಂಡೆ). Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated to mark the end of Narakasura named daithya. It is celebrated on Ashwija Krishna Chaturdashi. Who is Narakasura? Narakasura is a daithya born to Bhoodevi and Varahadevaru. He was the king of Pragjyotisha Nagar (now in Assam). He had occupied that King’s position after overthrowing danava king Ghatakasura. Why Krishna & Satyabhama killed Narakasura? Narakasura in association with Murasura, had brought control of the entire world under his belt. He went to Swargaloka and attacked Devendra, who had to flew out of Indraloka. He stole 16100 women (gopikaa stree, who are originally sons of Agni, born as ladies just to marry to Krishna) and had kept them in his Jail. All gods approached Srihari with the leadership of Indra, who assured them to put an end to Narakasura. But Narakasura had a boon that he would face death only at the hands of his mother Bhoodevi. So, Krishna asks his wife Sathyabhama, the reincarnation of Bhudevi, to be his charioteer in the battle with Naraka. Aditi, the mother of Devategalu approached Satyabhama for help, who in turn approached Srikrishna. Narakasura had 11 Akshohini Sainya, Krishna went alongwith Satyabhama, attacked Narakasura and his fort, riding on his chariot Garuda. Naraka’s palace was guarded by the five-headed daithya Murasura. Murasura hurled countless weapons at Krishna, but Krishna shot each one down with his bow and arrow. Then Krishna killed him with his Sudarshana dislocating Mura’s five heads. That is why Krishna got the name “Murari”. Then a fierce fight went on with Krishna and Narakasura. Satyabhama also joined in fighting with the daithya.Krishna also killed Narakasura with his Sudarshana Chakra and freed all the 16100 women who were imprisoned by the daithya. Bhoodevi then sang hymns in praise of Krishna and begged him to take Naraka’s son Bhagdatta under his protection. Krishna placed Bhagadatta (Narakasura’s son Bhagadatta had fought for Kauravaas in Kurukshetra War) on the throne and then freed all of Naraka’s prisoners. The devathaas showered Krishna with flowers from the heavens. Before dying, the Asura requested a boon that his death anniversary should be celebrated by all people on earth. This day is celebrated as ‘Naraka Chaturdashi’ – the first day of Diwali. Why oil bath to be taken on Naraka Chaturdashi day?- It is said Lord Krishna had an oil bath to rid himself off the blood spattered on his body when Naraka was killed. The tradition is followed and people offer prayers on the previous day of the Naraka Chaturdashi to the vessel in which water is being heated for having bath. Hindus light fireworks, which are regarded as the effigies of Narakasura who was killed on this day. Taking OIL-BATH is a must on this day. That Mahalakshmi would be getting from the bed. This is called as “Narakee Chaturdashi”, further they will not fear of “Naraka”. Abhyanga Snana is a full body massage and ritual bathing on the Narak Chaturdasi day during Diwali. In some regions, Abhyang Snana is performed before sunrise. Before doing Abhyanga Snaana – first have “Enne shaastra” from sumangali strees. Then do have normal snaana. Then do the abhyanga snaana to the idols in your house. Then remains of the oil used for devata samarpana to be mixed with the oil and to be applied to the other membes of your house. eNNeshaastra shall be done with gingelli oil. There is no Dosha for Vyateepaata, vaidhruthi, maataapitru Samvatsarika Shraddha also. Everybody has to take abhyanjana snaana. Even sanyasi have to take abhyanjana snaana on this day. Yamatarpana – After snaana, ahneeka, pooja, every one have to give tarpana to Yamadharmarajaru. As Yamadharmaraja has devatva and pitrutva, all should give tarpana. Jeevanpitru must give tarpana without using ellu (tila) facing south direction. Whereas those who are not having father they should give tarpana with apasavya with ellu (tila). When Surya is in Tularashi, we have to light of panju. Because of this, those who have been burnt in your family, those who have been dead out of lightening and thunder, etc will get Sadgathi. There is Harivasara on Dashami day after 8:22 PM on Saturday October 04th for UM and Rayaru mathas. No harivasara as per drik ganitha. Significance: Sri Krishna said to Yudhistira, "Oh king, please listen as I explain the glories of this EkAdashi - Pashankusha EkAdashi - which removes all sins. On this day one should worship the Deity of Padmanabha, according to the rules of archana viddhi(regulations). If a person who is a vishnava and have shown disrespect to Shiva or if he is a Shiva bhakta and have shown disrespect to Sri Hari, that person will spend 14 long yugas in hell. That sin will be wiped out when a person fasts on this special ekadashi. ( this indicates that ekadashi is to be practiced by both Shiva and Hari Bhaktas ) Also by practicing this ekadashi, people will get health, wealth, progeny and moreover previous 10 generations of both mother and father will attain moksha. NOTE: This is the beginning of dwidala vrata from Padmam Purana : bAlatvE yaowvanE chaiva vraddhatvEcha nrapOttama | upOshyaikAdashIM nOnaM naiva prApnOti durgatiM || Whether one is a child, a youth, or in old age, fasting on PAshankusha EkAdashi frees him from all sins and makes him immune to suffering a hellish rebirth. Whosoever observes a fast on the PAshankusha EkAdasii becomes free of all his sins and returns to the spiritual abode of Lord Sri Hari. yasya puNya vihInAni dinAnyAyAMti yAMti ch | salOhakAra BrIstrEva sannapi najEvati || if a resident of earth fails to perform spiritual deeds, especially the observance of a fast on days such as EkAdasii, his breathing is said to be no better, or of as much use as the breathing/puffing of a blacksmith's bellows.
