Ekadashi upavasa is on Sunday June28th andDwadashi parane is on Monday June 29th after local sun rise.
Significance: This is a special Ekadashi as it comes in the Adhika masa. This Ekadashi is also called Padmini ekadashi. Adhika masa is also known as purushottam masa. This is very special to Sri Lakshmi Devi and she herself has explained the significance of ekadashi during adhika masa. Story from Puran: The Ekadasi fasting named Padmini Ekadashi happens only when there is an Adhika Masa or Extra month in a Hindu Lunar Calendar. There is an interesting story associated with Padmini Ekadashi. This Katha was narrated by Pulastya Muni to Sage Narada. In the Treta Yuga there lived a King named Krtavirya. He was a very powerful and famous king. But the king had no son to inherit the kingdom and the King was worried about the future of his people after his death. So he decided to go to forest and do tapas and other austerities to please Lord Vishnu. Krtavirya's wife, Padmini, came to know about her husbands intentions and decided to go along with him. The king made an ashram near Sage Atri and started performing austerities but he was not able to please Lord Vishnu. A worried Padmini then consulted Sage Atri's wife Anasuya ( maha pathivrata and gyani ). She advised her to observe two ekadasis falling in the Adhika Masa. Krtavirya and Padmini then observed the two Ekadasis falling in Adhika Masa. Soon Lord Vishnu appeared before the couple and said that their wishes will be fulfilled as they had observed the two Ekadasis in Adhika Masa which is highly auspicious. (Please note that the Adhika Masa is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is also known as Purushottam Masa). Queen Padmini in due course of time gave birth to Kartaviryarjuna, who was a very powerful king and he is even believed to have defeated and imprisoned Ravana. madhveshaarpaNamastu

What is Adhika Masa?
Adhika Masa is the thirteenth month in a Calender year followed by Lunar Calender,i.e., Chandramana reethya. It is not followed by those who are following Solar Calender, i.e., Sourmaana Reethya. As per Chandramaana reethya, we have 354 days in a calendar year. But as per Souramana reethya, (Solar Calender) we have 365 days. So, there is a difference of 11 days between Sourmana reethya and Chandramana reethya. So, these extra days difference of 11 days will be added, once in 33 months (32 months, 16 days , and 4 ghalige to be precise) , so that there is extra 29 or 30 days in that particular year. This concept of adding one extra month after every 33 months is known as Adhika Masa.In states like Karnataka, Andhrapradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, etc, the adhika maasa begins on Shudda padya and ends on Amavasya day (New moon day). In North India, Adhika Masa begins on Bahula Padya, and ends on Hunnime (Full moon day). Whereas in states like Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Tamilnadu, there is no adhika maasa for them, as they are following solar calendar.Adhika Maasa is applicable for Chandramana followers only. The lunar calendar is completely synchronizes with the solar calendar in a period of 60 years. Mathematically speaking a Chandramana Varsha (Lunar calendar = 29.5305 X 12 = 354.366 days) has 354 days, while a Soura Varsha (Solar calendar = 365.2587 days) has 365 days, the difference being 11 days per year. For one year (12 months) – 11 days For second year (12 months) – 11 days For 8 months ( 8 months) – 7 ½ days For 16 days & 4 galige – ½ days – —————————————————-- Total 33 months – 30 days ———————————————-- “dvaatrimshadbhi: gatai: maasai: dinai: ShOdashabhistatha| GaTikaanaaM chatuShkENa patatyadhikamaasaka: “ || द्वात्रिंशद्भि: गतै: मासै: दिनै: षोदशभिस्तथ। ದ್ವಾತ್ರಿಂಶದ್ಭಿ: ಗತೈ: ಮಾಸೈ: ದಿನೈ: ಷೋದಶಭಿಸ್ತಥ| ಘಟಿಕಾನಾಂ ಚತುಷ್ಕೇಣ ಪತತ್ಯಧಿಕಮಾಸಕ: | Sankramana during Adhika Masa – During Adhika Masa, there will not be any sankramana. Sometimes, it may happen in 29 months, 30 months, 31 months, and 35 months also due to the variations in Graha sanchara. That is why it is said in Mahabharatha that the Adhikamasa will be occurring twice in 5 years. panchamE panchamE varshE dvaumaasaavadhimaasakau | tEshaam kaalaatirEkENa grahaaNaamatichaarata: | Further, Adhika maasa will happen when there are two Hunnime or two amaavaasye days during the two sankramanaas. That is why it is called as “Purushottama Maasa”. Other names for Adhika Masa – “Mala Maasa”, – as Srihari will remove all our sins during this maasa. As this month will be without sankranti, there is no importance of Shubha kaarya like Marriage, Upanayana, Gruhapravesha, etc. “malimlucha”, – When there is no sun in a particular month it is termed as “Malimucha”. Once Chaturmuka brahmadevaru kept the Saadhane done through Vedokta acharane in one side of a scale and sadhane done done during purushottama maasa. Then the scale weighed more in purushottama sadhane side itself, which clearly explains the importance of Adhika maasa Duties during Adhika Maasa –

Then Srihari told her that he himself is the God for the Adhika maasa with the name Purushottama. What ever punya kaarya lika snaana, japa, homaa will bring akshaya phala. He also told that those who does not do any punya karya during Adhika Maasa will be getting daaridrya, putrashoka, etc Those who could not do for the whole month can do it atleast on Krishna paksha Astami, navami, chaturdashi, Dwadashi, pournami, chaturdashi, etc. Earlier there lived a brahmana by name Kaushika who was a jitendriya. He had a son by name maitreya who was addicted to drinking and was a kamaandha. One day Maitreya went to forest. He killed a brahmana in Sourashtra and snatched all the money with the Brahmin. Because he killed that brahmana, the whole City itself was burnt. As he got brahma hatya dosha, Maitreya was taken by Yamadootharu and was thrown in Krumeekunda. He was in the Hell for more than 10000 years. After a long period, Kaushika, the father of Maitreya came to know about the same. Kaushika searched all the shruthi – shaastraas and found a remedy for brahmahatya parihara. He did the Vratha named Adhikamasa Vratha and gave 33 apoopadaana and his son was saved from the Hell. As such, Adhikamasa vratha, if done with proper anusandhana can remove brahma hatya dosha also APOOPA DAANA SANKALPAअपूप दान संकल्प -आचमन, प्राणानायम्य – ……………………………….. Narahari Sumadhwa Mobile - 9880921624 or 09042729165 Drik Ganitha: Ekadashi upavasa is on FridayJune12th and Dwadashi parane is on Saturday June 13th after Harivasara ending at 7:21 AM.

Significance: This is a special ekadashi the benefits of which can cure severe diseases in the body. This is known as the Yogini Ekadashi. It is interesting to note that this Ekadashi is recommended by a great devotee of Lord Shiva, Markandeya maha muni to another Shiva Devotee. Thus gives a clear indication that Ekadashi Vrata is for everyone including Shiva Bhaktas too. Story from Purana: ( Padma Puran ) "The king of AlakApuri Kuvera, the treasurer of the devas was a steadfast devotee of lord Shiva. He employed a servant named HemamAli as his personal gardener. HemamAli, a Yaksha like Kuvera, was very lustfully attracted to his gorgeous wife,SwarUpavatii, who had large, enchanting eyes. "HemamAli's daily duty was to visit MAnasarovara Lake and bring back flowers for his master, Kuvera, with which he would use them in the puja offerings to lord Shiva. One day, after picking the flowers,HemamAli went to his wife instead of returning directly to his master and fulfilling his duty by bringing the flowers for the puja. Absorbed in loving affairs of a bodily nature with his wife, he forgot to return to the abode of Kuvera. "Oh king, while HemamAli was enjoying with his wife, Kuvera had begun the worship of lord Shiva as normal in his palace and soon discovered that there were no flowers ready to be offered in the midday pUjA. The lack of such an important item (upachara) angered the great Koshad-yaksha (treasurer of the devas) even more, and he asked a Yaksha messenger, `Why has dirty-hearted HemamAli not come with the daily offering of flowers? Go find out the exact reason and report back to me in person with your findings.' The Yaksha returned and told Kuvera, `Oh dear lord, HemamAli has become lost in freely enjoying time with his wife.' "Kuvera became extremely angry when he heard this and at once summoned lowly HemamAli before him. Knowing that he had been remiss and dawdling in his duty and exposed as meditating on his wife's body, HemamAli approached his master in great fear. The gardener first paid his obeisances and then stood before his lord, whose eyes had become red with anger and whose lips trembled in rage. So enraged, Kuvera cried out to HemamAli, `Oh you sinful rascal! Oh destroyer of religious principles! You are a walking offense to the devas! I therefore curse you to suffer from white leprosy and to become separated from your beloved wife! Only great suffering is deservedly yours! Oh lowborn fool, leave this place immediately and betake yourself to the lower planets to suffer!' "And so HemamAli fell at once from grace in AlakApuri and became ill with the terrible affliction of white leprosy. He awoke in a dense and fearful forest, where there was nothing to eat or drink. Thus he passed his days in misery, unable to sleep at night due to pain. He suffered in both winter and summer season, but because he continued to worship lord Shiva himself with faith, his consciousness remained purely fixed and steady. Although implicated by great sin and its attendant reactions, he remembered his past life because of his piety. "After wandering for some time here and there, over mountains and across plains, HemamAli eventually came upon the vast expanse of the HimAlayan mountain ranges. There he had the wonderful good fortune to come in contact with the great saintly soul MarkanNDeya Rishi, the best of ascetics, whose duration of life it is said, extends to same of the days of Brahma dEvaru. "MarkaNDeya Rishi was seated peacefully at his Ashrama, looking as effulgent as a second BrahmA. HemamAli, feeling very sinful, stood at a distance from the magnificent sage and offered his humble obeisances and choice prayers. Always interested in the welfare of others, MarkaNDeya Rishi saw the leper and called him near, "Oh you, what sort of sinful deeds have you done to earn this dreadful affliction?' "Hearing this, HemamAli painfully and ashamed replied, `Dear sir, I am a Yaksha servant of lord Kuvera, and my name is HemamAli. It was my daily service to pick the flowers from the MAnasarovara lake for my master's worship of lord Shiva, but one day I was negligent and was late in returning with the offering because I had become overwhelmed with lusty passion for enjoying bodily pleasures with my wife. When my master discovered why I was late, he cursed me in great anger to be as I am before you. Thus I am now bereft of my home, my wife, and my service. But fortunately I have come upon you, and now I hope to receive from you an auspicious benediction, for I know that ,devotees such as you are as merciful as the Sri Hari (Bhakta Vatsala) and always carry the interest of others uppermost in their hearts. That is their your nature. Oh best of sages, please help me!' "Softhearted MarkaNDeya Rishi replied, `Because you have told me the truth, I shall tell you about a fast day that will benefit you greatly. If you fast on the EkAdasii that comes during the dark fortnight of the month of jyestha/AshADha, you will surely be freed of this terrible curse.' HemamAli fell to the ground in complete gratitude and offered him his humble obeisances again and again. But MarkaNDeya Rishi stood there and lifted poor HemamAli u to his feet, filling him with inexpressible happiness. "Thus, as the sage had instructed him, HemamAli dutifully observed the EkAdasii fast, and by its influence he again became a handsome Yaksha. Then he returned home, where he lived very happily with his wife." Lord Sri Krishna concluded, "So, you can readily see, Oh Yudhishthira that fasting on Yogini EkAdasii is very powerful and auspicious. Whatever merit one obtains by feeding eighty-eight thousand brahmins is also obtained simply by observing a strict fast on Yogini EkAdasii. For one who fasts on this sacred EkAdashi, she (EkAdashi Devi), destroys heaps of past sinful reactions and makes him most pious. Oh King, thus I have explained to you the purity of Yogini EkAdashi." -From Padma Puran part-3 uttarakhanda 53rd chapter. Sri MadhveshrapNamastu |
