Ekadashi is on Tuesday March 31st and Dwadashi parane is on Wednesday April 1stafter local sunrise. Who: All Hindus between 8 and 80 years of age. Significance: Happy new year and Happy Ramnavami!! Great way to start a new year with kamada Ekadashi. The Ekadashi that occurs during the light fortnight of Chaitra is named Kamada Ekadashi. It consumes all sins. It is very purifying, and it bestows the highest merit upon one who faithfully observes it. Also interesting to note from the story how a wife saved her husband from curse by performing ekadashi. On dwadashi day special pooja is offered to Sri Hari using 'damana manjari' a daisy like plant with bluish green leaves and small yellow flowers. This is called damankOtsava. Prior to this pooja, poojas are offered to rati and Manmatha ( Kamadeva, hence the name Kamada Ekadashi ) On the ekadashi day, infront of Sri Hari rati and kama deva idols are installed on a sarvotobhadra mandala. dhavana twigs are also placed along. After kamadeva pooja is done, Keshava idol is installed/invoked in the center and pooja done to Sri Keshava with damana manjaris along with kama gayatri ( Please talk to your gurus for more detailed info on this pooja ) Kamadeva is worshipped with anthryami deva of Pradhuymna as Sri Hari roopa. It is very auspicious to do pooja to Sri Hari with Dhavana & maruga leaves in the month of Chaitra. Katha from Purana: ( Padma Puran ) Once, long ago, there was a city named Nagpura and Naga King Pundarika was its ruler. In his court there were Nagas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, and Apsaras among its citizens. Among the Gandharvas were Lalit and his wife Lalita, who was a lovely couple. These two were intensely attracted to each other. Lalita loved her husband dearly, and likewise he constantly thought of her within his heart. They were inseparable. Once, in the court of King Pundarika, many Gandharvas were singing, Lalit was one among them. While singing Lalit could not help thinking about his beloved, and because of this distraction he lost track of the song's melody. Lalit sang the song improperly, and one of the envious snake named kakort who was in attendance at the king's court complained to the king that Lalit ws lost in the thought's of his wife that's because he lost track and sang improperly. The king became furious upon hearing this, and he shouted, 'Oh foolish knave, because you were lustfully thinking of your wife instead of reverently thinking of your king as you performed your court duties, I curse you to at once become a Demon !, a man-eating demon with a terrified appearance. Lalit immediately became a fearful Demon. His arms were eight miles long, his mouth was as big as a huge cave, his eyes were as awesome as the sun and moon, his nostrils resembled enormous pits in the earth, his neck was a veritable mountain, his hips were four miles wide, and his gigantic body stood a full sixty-four miles high. Thus poor Lalit, the Gandharva singer, had to suffer the reaction of his offense against King Pundarika. Seeing her husband suffering as a horrible monster,mLalita became overwhelmed with grief. She thought, 'Now that my dear husband is suffering the effects of the kings' curse, what is left for me? What should I do? Where should I go?' In this way Lalita grieved day and night. Instead of enjoying life as a Gandharvas wife, she wandered everywhere in the thick jungle with her husband, who had fallen completely under the spell of the king's curse. He wandered fitfully across forbidding region, a once-beautiful Gandharva now reduced to the behavior of a man-eater. One day, while wandering in the jungle, Lalita met the sage Shringi . He was sitting on the peak of the Vindhyachala Hmountain. Approaching him, she immediately offered the ascetic her respectful obeisance's. The sage noticed her bowing down before him and said, 'Sister, Who are you and why have you come here? Why you look so gloomy. Please tell me everything in truth.' Lalita replied, 'Oh Brahmana, my name is Lalita. I wander in the jungle with my dear husband, whom King Pundarika has cursed to become a man-eating demon. I am greatly aggrieved to see him like this. Oh Saint, please tell me how I can perform some act of atonement on behalf of my husband. How can I free him from this demonic form, please help me. The sage replied, 'There is an Ekadashi named Kamada that occurs in the light fortnight of the month of Chaitra. It is coming up soon. Whoever fasts on this day has all his desires fulfilled. If you observe this Ekadashi fast according to its rules and regulations and give the merit you thus earn from your fast to your husband, he will be freed from the curse at once.' Lalita faithfully observed the fast of Kamada Ekadashi according to the instructions of the sage Shringi, and on Dvadasi she appeared before him and the Deity of Lord Vasudeva and said, ' mayAtaM tadvrataM chIrNM kAmadAyA upOkshaNaM | tasya puNya prabhAvENa gachChatvatya pishAchatA || I have faithfully observed the fast of Kamada Ekadashi. By the merit earned through my observance of this fast, let my husband be free from the curse that has turned him into a beast. May the merit I have gained thus free him from his misery.' And Lalita's husband, who stood nearby, was at once freed from the king's curse. He immediately regained his original form as the Gandharva Lalit, a handsome heavenly singer adorned with many beautiful ornaments. All this was accomplished by the power and glory of Kamada Ekadashi. At last the Gandharva couple boarded a celestial airplane and ascended to heaven. Sri Krishna continued, 'Oh Yudhishthira! , anyone who hears this story should certainly observe holy Kamada Ekadashi to the best of his ability, such great merit does it bestow upon the faithful devotee. I have therefore described its glories to you for the benefit of all humanity. There is no better Ekadashi than Kamada Ekadashi. it also nullifies demoniac curses. In all the three worlds and moreover it grants all the wishes'. its also equivalent of doing Vajapayee yagna. Thus ends the narration of "Kamada Ekadashi" from Padma Purana Part-3 uttarakhanda 48th chapter. Sri MadhvesharpaNamastu:

“ಚಂದ್ರಗ್ರಹಣ” – Lunar Eclipse – 04.04.2015
On this day we must not do panchamrutha, phalasamarpane, hastodaka for yathigalu, as the yathigalu will be on fasting on the Grahana DayWe must not take food on this day, as Vedarambha starts from sooryodaya itself (i.e.,9 hours before the start of Chandra Grahana,). (For Suryagrahana it should be before 12 hours, before the start of the grahana)There is an exception for sick, pregnant, and aged above people 80 years and children below 8 years, who can take food upto 10.00 am. For others, they should not take any food on this day. They can take food only after moksha of Chandra Grahana Shraddha falling on pournami day – In case of death anniversary falling on the eclipse day, regular shraddha will be performed only after the eclipse is over. If on the grahana day, morning bhojana is permitted, then shraddha can be done on the same day. Otherwise, the shradda to be done after grahana is over. This time they can do it on the same day in the morning.Partial Lunar Eclipse is visible in Asia, Australia. Newzeeland, Chandra Grahan can be seen in entire India.Sparsha – 3.45 pm Madhyakala – 5.30 pmMoksha – Night 7.15 pm Total period 3 hours and 30 minutes As Grahana is visible in India only after suryaasta (i.e., after 6.39pm), we need not do snaana, etc., at 3.45 pm. However, at 6.39pm, we have to take bath, and do all the parayana, japa during the available period of 35 minutes. Once that Grahana moksha time is over, i.e., at 7.15 pm, we have to take bath, and do pooja, naivedya ( Hastodaka not to be done). Then only bhojana can be taken. For those who have to do shraddha, they have to do it after grahana moksha. Local time to be verified in other places :

This will occur only when the sun, earth and the moon are aligned exactly, that will be always on a full moon (Pournami) day. What is Vedaramba? – This is a period after start of which period, we must not take eat/drink any thing. This will be 9 hours prior to Chandra Grahana and 12 hours before Surya Grahana, respectively. Why we are keeping Darba on all the items during Grahana?– Darba is born from the body of Varaha devaru. In Darba, there is sannidhana of Srihari, Brahma and Rudra devaru. So, Darba is always pure. During Grahana, all these items like milk, curds, vegetables, which are being kept will loose their power and becomes unusable. But with the use of Darba being kept on these items, their shuddatwa will be maintained and one can use the same after Grahana also.Kethugrasta Chandragrahana – Who is Kethu? During Samudra Mathana, when Mohini roopi Srihari was distributing the amrutha, one daithya by name Svarbhanu, came in a disguise and sat among the devate’s row. Srihari gave him Amrutha also. At that time Sun and Moon, {ಸೂರ್ಯಚಂದ್ರರು} on seeing that Swarbhanu has come in Devate’s row and taking amrutha, complained to Mohini, when Srihari through his Sudarshana removed the head of that daithya. Actually that daithya had done penance asking for Amrutha to be falling to his mouth. As such, Srihari had allowed Amrutha to be swallowed upto its mouth, but it didn’t enter beyond mouth, Srihari had removed his head. As such, the head of the daithya was fixed to a snake’s body to become “Rahu”, and the other portion without head is called as “Kethu”. To take a revenge on Surya Chandraru, Rahu tries to swallow Surya and Kethu tries to swallow Moon during Surya Grahana and Chandra Grahana respectively. That is why the eclipses are termed as Rahugrasta Suryagrahana and Kethugrasta Chandragrahana. Clothes kept in Madi (ಮಡಿ) before Grahana are not to be used after Grahana. After Grahana, do snaana and clothes to be kept freshly. “ಗ್ರಹಣಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಣಗು ಹಾಕಿದ್ದ ಮಡಿ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಗ್ರಹಣದ ನಂತರ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮತ್ತೆ ಸ್ನಾನಾನಂತರ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ಒಣಗಿಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು.” Rajaswala strees –Even the Rajaswala ladies must observe Grahana snaana – But they must have water poured by somebody to a bucket and from that bucket they must take bath. They must not squeezout . They shall sit in the wet cloth itself and do dhyana. ಸೂತಕೇ ಮೃತಕೇ ಚೈವ ನ ದೋಷೋ ರಾಹುದರ್ಶನೇ | ಸ್ನಾನೇ ನೈಮಿತ್ತಿಕೇ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ ನಾರೀ ಯದಿ ರಜಸ್ವಲಾ | ಪಾತ್ರಾಂತರಿತೋಯೇನ ಸ್ನಾನಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ವ್ರತಂ ಚರೇತ್ | ನ ವಸ್ತ್ರನಿಷ್ಪೀಡನಂ ಕಾರ್ಯಂ ನಾನ್ಯದ್ ವಸ್ತ್ರಂ ಚ ದಾರಯೇತ್ | sootakE mRutakE chaiva na dOShO raahudarshanE | snaanE naimittikE praaptE naarI yadi rajasvalaa | paatraaMtaritOyEna snaanaM kRutvaa vrataM charEt | na vastraniShpIDanaM kaaryaM naanyad vastraM cha daarayEt | Pregnants – It is advisable that the pregnants should not come out during Grahana period, as it may affect the growth of the child. When Ekadashi has "viddha" and on dwadashi day, "shravana nakShatra" is there in both the cases fasting to be done on dwadashi day.
shravana shall be there upto madhyaahna In aruNOdayakaala it shall be abhijit sparsharahita But while determining "madhyaahna", "abhijit" - there is maTa bedha., and as such thee is some difference between different Mutts. But this time all the Mutts - Uttaradimutt, Vyasarajamutt, Sripadaraja Mutt, Rayara Mutt, etc.. are following shravana upavaasa on 17.03.2015 As such, Ekadaashi shall be observed both on 16.3.2015 and 17.3.2015 and Dwadashi shall be on 18.3.2015 uttaraaShaaDhakaNikaa kalaa yaavanna dRushyatE | saa jayaMtI parityaajyaa shunaa sprUShTaM haviryathaa | uttaraaShaaDhamilitashravaNadvaadashIvrataM | suraabiMdubhiraasiktatIrthavachChObhayaM tyajEt | dvaadashIshravaNOpEtaa abhijit sparshasaMyutaa | aruNOdayakaalE tu naivOpOShyaa manIShibhi : | (kUrmavachana| aruNOdayavElaayaaM abhijit sparshanaM yadi | shrINaa chEt shaShTiGaTikaa nOpOShyaa viShNutatparai: | (dharmasaMhitaa| 'Condition 1. The shravana naxatra should not have contact with Uttarashada naxatra on this day. UttarAshAda is present at Sunrise and ShravaNa. Condition 2. The shravana naxatra should have contact with Dhanista naxatara on this day. Condition 3. The Shravana naxatra should be present at Sunrise time. Condition 4. The sravana naxatra should be running through the afternoon on this day. On this day, ie., 17.3.2015 - on Dwadashi day - Shravana Nakshatra is there - wherever Dwadashi tithi is there upto 5 hours after Suryodaya Many people have been asking about the Shravanopavasa on 17.3.2014 As such, I have tried to clarify based on ShravaNopavaasa. "ShravaNa" should be madhyaahna vyaapini. During arunodaya kaala it shall have abhijit sparsharahita. Here, in the words "madhyaahna", "abhijit" there are different interpretations amongst different Mutts. As such, there may be some difference in observing fasting. Question - If you observe shravana dwadashi upavaasa, there will be two upavaasaas. As such, you will not be observing "paaraNe" on dwadashi. Does it not amount to vratha bhanga? Answer - No. Both for dwadashi and shravana nakshatra, the devate is Vishnu only. As such, non observance of paarane will not amount to vratha bhanga. On Dwadashi day there are two instances of observing fasting. Once when dashami it is "dashami viddha" dwadashi fasting to be done. Similarly on Dwadashi day if it has "shravana"nakshatra, also it should be observed as fasting day. Importance of Ekadashi – 1. According to Mahabharatha Shanti parva – Ekadashi is compared most valuable than Ahimsa, Satyavachana, Daana and indriya nigraha. 2. Kashi/Gaya/Gangasnaana/Kurukshetra darshana – nothing is superior to Ekadashi. 3. Thousands of Ashwamedha Yaga is not even equal to 1/16of Ekadashi. 4. Thousands of Grahana Parvakala, thousands of Vyatipata Yoga, is not even equal to 1/16 of Ekadashi phala. 5.. By doing Ekadashi upavaasa, janmaantara sins also will be removed 6. By doing Ekadashi Pancha karmendriya and pancha jnaanendriyagalu all will have purity 7. On Ekadashi day – there are some exceptions for Pregnants, aged above 80 years, and children below 8 years, and those who are suffering from diseases. – That too they can take food to a maximum of 1/4 of what they used to take on other days. 8. On Ekadashi day if we eat or if we tell some body to eat – he will get “naraka loka”. 9. Even during Soothaka, Rajaswala dosha, – one has to perform Ekadashi 10. Apart from doing Ekadashi, we have to perform Dwadashi paarane also in time. If we do Ekadashi and does bhojana late on Dwadashi day, we will not get for having done Ekadashi. King Rukmaangada, King Ambarisha, Sage Durvasa, and all Vaidhika mathacharyas have demonstrated the greatness and power of observing EkAdasi Vratha.. Please note : In Ambarisha Durvasa Maharshi Story about ekadashi, it ppears that Durvasu was ignorant of Ekadashi Mahatwa. But he was well aware of Ekadashi. He behaved like just to show the importance of Haridina – Dashami, Ekadashi and Dwadashi, as per the instructions of Srihari only. Ambarisha is definitely inferior to Durvasa Rushigalu. Please note : There are many devotees of Rayaru who are doing one time fasting or one phalahara on Thursday. But Rayaru has never told us to fasting or one time bhojana on Thursday. It is only their belief and with due respect to Rayaru we are doing like this. But if u r doing fasting/half fasting on Thursday and not doing Ekadashi – Rayaru will never be pleased. Instead he will curse us. Defeated Advaitha pundits at Kanchi – In his very age itself he defeated many pundits in Kanchi. During his early period Kanchi was a famous university for Vedanta Studies, many scholars were there. When Vyasarajaru entered there, many had seen his scholarly works and they asked him to define Madhwa Siddantha. Sri Vyasarajaru defined the same as follows : Hari: paratara: – Srihari is sarvottama. There is no one superior to him. There are so many references which proves that Srihari is the only Sarvottama. Some of the shlokaas are : Satyam jagat – This world is Satya – true. Veda vaakya says “विश्वं सत्यं मघवानौ” . That is why Acharya Madhwa says “बहुचित्र जगत् बहुधा करणात् परशक्ति अनंतगुण: परम” | There is not even a single sentence which says that Jagat is mithya. Tattvata: bhEda: – svabhaavata: there is a difference between Chetana and achetana, bedha in jeevaas, jadaas, time, place, moola prakruti, – every where there is bedha. “Dwaitha” and “Bedha” are two paryaya words. Only if we agree Bedha, then only there will be prominence for Harisarvottamatva, Jagatsatyatva, Taratamya, etc. JeevagaNaa: harEranucharaa: – Even though Chetanas are different from Jadaas, they are not svatantra. Without Srihari’s ashraya no one can survive. All are like the shadows of Srihari only. Whatever we do i.e., walking, seeing, listening, all we are doing with the asvatantra, i.e., adheenathwa of Srihari only. Neechochcha bhaavangataa : – Right from the truna jeeva to Chaturmukha brahma, all have different gunaas. There is taratamya in svaroopa, svabhaava, some are eligible for Vaikunta padavi, some for nitya naraka, some have sukha + dukha mishrana. mukthi: naija suKaanubhUti: – Whatever we are having as sukha through our daihika sambandha is not real. It should be mahatma gjnana poorvaka, sudhruda. Depending on their yogyata learning the mahime of Srihari, pure bhakthi is the only sadhana for mukthi. As per Vadiraja Tirtha’s Rukminisha vijaya – “भक्तो नाम स एव य: करगते कृष्णेपि वेदोदितं तत्कर्माचरत् ।”. Dwesha is not a sadhana for Mukthi. Navavidha Dweshaas –
Once when he was in Mulbagilu, he got a dream, wherein he saw Mukyapranadevaru, who was shown as 732 Mukyaprana idols. So, he thought of doing pratiste of 732 mukyaprana idols all over the country. Some of the mukyaprana idols which he has done the pratistapane are : In penagonda itself, he did the pratiste of 365 mukyaprana devaru on all the days of the year. In Adavani district, we can see 109 idols, Mulbagilu, Alasuru, Kolara, Kengal Hanumantha, Erode, Bhavani, Salem, Yelahanka, Kakolu, Rajanakunte, Santebidanuru, Channapatna, Brahmanyapura, Maddur, Mandya, Bannur, T Narasipura, Nanjanagud, Mysore, Satyamangala, etc. Purandaradasaru - He gave daasa deekshe to Purandaradasaru, who was famous as navakoti narayana. He honoured his devaranamas by keeping them next to Sarvamoola granthas by calling them as “Purandaropanishat”. This made Sri Purandaradasaru to compose lakhs of devaranamas which are Harisarvottamatva and Vayujeevottamatva pradhipaadaka. KANAKADASARU – Even though Kanakadasaru was born in a lower caste, he was offering Theertha, as he knows his jeeva yogyate, he respected his devaranamaas. Tirupati pooje for 12 years - When Tirupathi Venkatesha temple archakas started using the property, jewels of Venkatesha for themselves, the King Salva Bhoopala killed all the archakas and there was no one for the pooje at Tirupathi. As such, Srivyasarajaru did the pooja of Tirupathi Timmappa for 12 years, till one of the Archaka’s wife deliver a child and after getting the child brahmopanayana, he handed over the pooja adhikara to the child once again. It is the Sri Vyasaraja’s unselfishness only that he handed over the pooja power to that family once again. Otherwise, that pooja power would have been with Madhwas only. Sri Vyasaraja’s Granthas –

Born with the Anugraha of Vaageesha Thirtha - Once Sri Vaagisha Theertharu of Sri Vishnutheertha Mutt happened to visit the Village Hoovinakere (It was also called as Kumbhasi). There, Ramabhatta and Gowridevi Dampathigalu begged the sheeegalu to bless them with a child. Sri Vaageesha Theertharu blessed him and imposed a condition that the child born to be handed over to the Mutt for upbringing. That too only if the child happens to born outside the house, then they shall hand over to the Mutt not otherwise. The couple agreed wholeheartedly thinking that the child will be born inside the house. Nine months completed. On one Sadhana Dwadashi day, i.e, on Magha Shudda Dwadashi, Gowri was performing Tulasi Puja early in the morning. She saw some cows entering the paddy fields which they own, and the cows started eating and destroying the crops. Gowri took a stick and chased the cows, moved quite a distance from the house forgetting the agreement with the Sri Vageesha Thirtharu. Suddenly her pregnancy pain started and she could not return home and delivered the child in the field itself. Immediately Sri Vaageesha Thirtharu was informed of the birth of the child and a golden plate was sent from the Mutt and the child was brought to the Mutt. The baby never touched the ground until it reached the Mutt. The baby was fed with the milk that had been offered to the deity as naivedya; and the parents named the boy as “Bhoovaraha”. The paddy fields which Gowri gave birth to the child is called as “Gowri Gadde”. Sri Vaageesha Thirtharu sent the boy back to her parents and with an instruction to bring back after a few years. The child was growing like a Pournima Chandra. Bhoovaraha learnt all skills and studied well right from his early days itself. After some time the swamiji asked the parents to hand over the boy to the mutt. The parents with reluctance handed over the boy to the seer. Sri Vageesha Theertharu told the parents that the services of the child is required for the prachara of Madhwa Tathwa. After seeing the child’s vast knowledge, vairagya, Jnana Bhakthi, he decided to give him Sanyashrama at the age of 8 years and was given the name “Vaadiraaja Theertha” Sri Vaadirajaru studied under Sri Vaagisha Theertharu until his Vrundavana Pravesha. After some time, Sri Vageesha Theertharu entered Brundavana, then for further studies, Sri Vadirajaru went to Sri Vyasarajaru in Hampi, where he met Purandara Dasaru, Kanakadasaru, Sri Vishnu Theertharu (later Vijayeendra Theertharu) and King Krishnadevaraya. Honour by Sri Krishnadevaraya – King Krishnadevaraya was impressed by Vaadiraaja’s personality and gave him the title of “prasangaabharaNa Theertha”“ (Jewel of a Speaker). Vaadiraaja returned back to Udupi after a few years. As a parting gift, Sri Vyaasaraajaru gave him the “Vyaasa mushti” that had been gifted to him during a trip to Udupi. Tirupathi Darshana During his visit to Tirupathi hills, the entire hill and each and every stone looked to him, as full of “Saaligrama” and he ascended the entire hill with his knees and hands only without the help of his legs. The Saligraama garland worn by Srinivasa was a humble offering made by Sri Vadirajararu. Hayagreeva Idol Once a goldsmith was melting a metal for making an idol of Ganapathi. The goldsmith tried and tried but could not do so even after several attempts. Each it was becoming an idol of Hayagreeva icon. That night the goldsmith was instructed in his dream to hand over the idol to Vaadirajaru. Similarly Vaadirajaru also received a dream wherein he was instructed to receive the Hayagreeva idol from the Goldsmith. Next day, the goldsmith went to Sri Vadirajaru and offered the Hayagreeva idol . Subsequently, the entire group of the goldsmith community from that region was provided with Chakrakana and were brought under Sonda Mutt. Vaadiraaja’s special Hayagreeva Naivedya Vaadirajaru used to offer Hayagreeva Naivedya to Hayagreeva Devaru. Hayagreeva consists of Jaggery, ghee, channa dall, almonds, grapes etc. Every day Hayavadana would emanate from the icon in the form of a white horse, eat Naivedya putting his forelegs on Vadiraja’s shoulders. Vaadirajaru used to sing Dashavatara Stuti and that the Hayavadana roopi horse used to dance to his appreciation every day. Hayavadana ate the Vishapooritha Hayagreeva to save Vaadirajaru – Once, some miscreants tried to test Vaadirajaru and put poison in the Hayagreeva meant for the naivedya. That day Hayavadana ate the complete Hayagreeva without leaving anything as prasadam. When Vaadiraajaru asked Hayavadana, why nothing is left as prasada, then god told it was because of poison, he had eaten entire Hayagreeva. The Lord also told him that the icon would develop a bluish-green tinge all over its body as proof . Vaadiraaja would have to offer ‘Vaadiraaja Gulla’ as naivedya for some period, when the tinge would gradually diminish, leaving just a streak of green at the neck to remind posterity of this incident. It is only because of this that the Vadiraja Gulla is being used by Sonda Mutt. Even though Gulla Vegetable is not to be used for cooking, only because of Sri Vaadirajaru using it in Sonda, Udupi people use Gulla. Reforms by Vaadiraajaru -
Vaadraaja Tirtha’s Granthagalu –
Sri Vaadiraajaru toured the entire “Bharatha Varsha” and visited almost all Theertha kshetras in the country. He has written a book titled “Theertha Prabhanda”, which is a master guide for the tourists with Anusandhana and Dhyana Shloka and Varnana of the Kshetra. १ ॥ (mangalacharana shloka) Once he was observing Chaturmaasya in Pune. There, he learnt that a Vidwat Sabha was organized to select the greatest Mahaakavya, and they were about to announce “Shishupala Vadha” by Magha a great poet as the Mahaakavya. Sri Vaadirajaru sent words to the organizers that he too has written a Shastra Kaavya Grantha, which is kept in Udupi, and asked them to include that also for evaluation for “Mahaakaavya”. The Organisers agreed and gave him 3 weeks time to bring it from Udupi. To everybody’s surprise, he wrote the entire “Rukminisha Vijaya” Kaavya within a span of 19 days that too during his spare time and presented for evaluation. When this work was presented at the conference the scholars were swept away by its poetic brilliance and had no hesitation in declaring it as the greatest Mahaakavya in Sanskrit literature. In accordance with their decision, the manuscript was taken in a procession around the city on a well-decorated elephant, with a lot of fanfare and glory. Actually “Shishupala Vadha” as the name itself suggests, by naming itself is inauspicious named and does not pose the importance of Sri Krishna whereas it highlights importance for a villain. But in Rukminisha Vijaya – Vaadirajaru has given a clear picture of Sri Krishna’s baalya, his childish behaviour, his plays with Gopika Streegalu. One must read the Kaavya or atleast hear the Kaavya – Rukminisha Vijaya to understand how fine it is. Normally a Kaavya gives us only story, sceneries, poems, etc., but Rukminisha Vijaya is not full of Story, sceneries, poems, explanations, but also gives as Tathva. Rukminisha Vijaya Kaavya was completed in just 19 days with good poetic excellence, with tathwa. At that time Vaadirajaru was not so famous as “Maagha” – Magha was quoted as having all the 3 qualities of Kalidasa (Upamaa), Bhaaravi (Arthagowravam), and Dandi (Pada lalithya). Vaadirajaru’s work of Rukminisha Vijaya has defeated even MAGHA. Dashavataara Stuti – Once he had visited Pandarapura and stayed in a temple there and served Panduranga Vittala. An angry man came and abused Vaadirajaru “that your horse is eating the entire crop every day and ruining his farms and that he is not able to catch it”. Then Vadirajaru told him that we are not having any horse with us. The complainant searched for the horse in the entire mutt but could not trace it. Vaadirajaru realized what has happened and asked the complainant to take him to his field. When they arrived at the field and examined the crop, the owner was astonished to see golden corn at all the places where the horse had eaten his crop. Vaadiraajaru, explained to him that that the horse was Lord Hayavadana himself, and that he was very lucky to have seen him. The crop owner surrendered at the feet of Vaadiraajaru , and offered his land to the Matha. On the way back, Vaadiraaja composed the Dashaavataara Stuthi. This is set to Ashvadhaati and sung sounds like a horse dancing. Ramesha Stuthi – This is the Stotra which one has to do paarayana early in the morning. Vaikunta Varnane - This is a Kannada Grantha written by Vaadirajaru about the Vaikunta. He has explained about the vaibhoga of Vaikunta. Lakshmi Shobhana – Once Arasappa Nayaka approached Sri Vaadiraajaru, and told that the groom to whom his daughter had to be married has died and asked his blessings on the groom and his daughter. Then Sri Vaadiraajaru composed Sri Lakshmi Shobane on the spot and the groom got back to life. This is a Kannada composition of Vaadirajaru and it is very popular because it is believed that singing this on the occasion of a wedding blesses the bride and groom with a long and happy married life. Lakshmi Shobhane describes the appearance of Lakshmi born out of the Samudra Mathana and her wedding with Srimannaarayana. Here Sri Lakshmi Devi before putting the garland on Srimannaraayana lists the demerits of each gods other than Naarayana. This is another Harisarvottama Prathipaadaka Grantha/Stotra. Nyaya sudha Guruvartha Deepika – It is a commentary on Nyayasudha & Tathvaprakashika Sarasa Bharati Vilasa- This is about the svarupa’s of Lakshi, Brahma (& vayu) and Saraswati (& Bharati). Yukti-Mallika (work on logical analysis of different philosophical systems) – This is his Magnum Opus with 5 Chapters called Sourabhas. They are “Guna Sourabha”, “Shuddhi Sourabha”, “Bheda Sourabha”, “Sadhana Sourabha” and “Phala Sourabha”. There is also a commentary on this by Late Sri Satya Pramoda Thirtha of the Uttaradi Mutt. Mahabharata-Prasthana (an independent view of Mahabharata by Veda Vyasa)- This work is called Mahabharata Lakshalankara an explanation of hundred thousand difficult words of the great epic Mahabharata. Bhagavatha Anukramanika – It is a short and brief work on “Srimadbhagavatham”. It is called as “Bhagavatha Anukramanika”, containing the various aspects and stories narrated in Bhagavatha, wherein each word may give 3-4 sequential stories of Bhagavatha. Narahari Sumadhwa |
