Chaturmasya starts from Ashada Shudda Dwadashi and ends on Kartika Shudda dashami. On Ashada Shudda dashami, all the yathis would have their head shaved. {Please note – Yathis are supposed to get their head shaved only on Pournami.} They are not suppose to get their head shaved during the entire Chaturmasya period. Some Yathis sits for Chaturmasya on Ashada Bahula Panchami, i.e., Teekarayara Aradhana Day. Chaturmasya comprises of Hindu Calender months Ashada, Shravana, Bhadrapada and Karthika.
Chaturmasya Bhagavadroopa – Sridhara, Hrusheekesha, Padmanabha and Damodara are the niyamaka Bhagavadroopa for ChaturmasyaAshada shukla Ekadashi – The eleventh day in Ashada (Shayanaikadashi) , – it is on this day that Srimannaarayana, even though he is sleepless, hungerless, pretends to sleep, which is termed as “Yoga Nidra”. He sleeps till Karthika Shudda Dwadashi (Uttana Dwadashi) .Everybody must observe Chaturmasya - All Chaturvarnaas, viz.,Brahmana, Kshatriya, Shudra, Vaishya, all should observe Chaturmasya. All Chatur Ashramas viz., Brahmachari, Gruhasta, Vanaprasta and Sanyasi . Even Women irrespective of Rajaswala Period must observe Chaturmasya Vratha. The main purpose of observing Chaturmasya is Bhagavad AJnya (Srihari’s Orders). We are doing this to please paramathma only. Observing Chaturmasya gets more punya than what if we do other vrathas. If we perform we get more punya, if not performed, we will get sin.We are not doing Marriage, Upanayana etc during this Chaturmasya, as Srimannaaraayana will be on sleep, i.e., Yoganidre., Auspicious functions done during this time due to ignorance, can result in health disorders, injury and other calamities – as per Skanda Purana. Naming ceremony can be done. Those who are doing shraddha during the Chaturmasya, have to follow the Chaturmasya dharma, on shraddha day, prohibited items not to be used.Mauna bhojana vratha – During bhojana one must not talk to anybody (loukika topics). He must do only Harismarane only and do the bhojana.Dharana – PaaraNa vratha – Those who observe this vratha must take bhojana one day, next day, he must observe fasting. This vratha to be followed for four months if possible. If not possible, first month or last month also can be done. On the starting day of Dharanaparana vratha – the first fasting day, he has to do punyaahavaachana. Do sankalpa – On paarane day, he has to give argya to Narayana 108 times, then he has to do bhojana. After completion of vratha, he has to do udyapana. Give Lakshminarayana idol daana after doing pooja of that idol with panchamrutha. After completion, he has to arrange for bhojana of brahmana – suvasini.a) Sugreeva had done this for sin (paapa) parihaaraartha of Vaali nigraha, as instructed by Ramachandra.b) As per Krishna’s instructions paandavaas had done this when Dharmaraja was worried after killing his relatives.c) Naaradaru had done this in his previous birth and was jitendriya. This vratha enables us to have control of our indriyaas.Paraaka Vratha – This is a vratha, which can eliminate all sins committed by us. One who is doing this vratha, must do fasting for 12 continuous days. This he has to observe for three days (total 36 days). With this all sins including Brahmahatya dosha also would be eliminated.Eka Bhukta Vratha – During Chaturmasya period, before starting eating one has to get served all the items in the bhojana plate (baale ele). Till the completion of means he is not supposed to add anything on his plate. i.e., everything to be served before start of bhojana itself. But it does not apply to taking water.Akhanda Vratha – Every day he has to do bhojana only once (except Ekadashi). After bhojana, he is not supposed to take even water till next day bhojana. Atleast this can be done during Chaturmasya dinatrayaas, i.e., Dashami & Dwadashi and must arrange for Brahmana-suvasini bhojana.ChandraayaNa vrataThis vratha to be done from Ashada shukla paaDya to amaavaasye or from Karthika Shukla paaDya to amaavaasye.Procedure 1– On the starting day, i.e, on Paadya, mix all the items prepared after naivedya as a single handful (1 ತುತ್ತು) and eat it. Ekadashi nothing to be taken. On the fifteenth day take 15 handful of food. On sixteenth day (Krishna paksha paadya) take 15 handful and maximum same no of cups of water, on dwiteeya 14 handful and go on reducing one handful each day. Normally, during this month, Sun will be in Aardra nakshatra, Punarvasu and Pushya nakshatras. Sun also will enter Karkataka Rashi, which day will be called as Dakshinayana punyakaala. During this period, the heat of the sun will be reduced when compared to Uttarayana punyakaala, the power of moon will be more. As the power of Sun is being reduced and Moon’s power will be increased, the heat in the body of the human/animals also is subject to change. That is why some rules have been for food. This vratha is called as “Shaka vratha”. Shaka means vegetables or heat. During this period more vegetables would be grown with the assistance of new rain and the heat inside the bhoomi. When the rainy season starts, the water goes inside the bhoomi, the temperature inside the bhoomi will be dissolved in the vegetable crops, resulting in the temperature already raised in the earlier months tend to increase further in our body. Many bacterias would be developed. Further the insects would come out and would join the roots of the vegetables. The vegetables, tamarind, green chillies, pickles, fruits, etc., would have more heat, As such, during this period vegetables are banned as per ayurvaada also. But the temperature required for our body can be got from other items which we are eating in this month sufficiently. 2ND month Dadhi Vratha- Shravana Shudda Ekadashi to Bhadrapada Shudda Dashami – During this period, curds should not be used in any form or manner while preparing naivedya. Curds is more heat and it raises the fat in our body. Already heat is increased during the earlier months in Uttarayana, and eating of curds may raise more heat, which may result in health obstacles. During this period, cow and other milk giving animals would be engaged in mithuna kriya. The cow milk would have more quality of unhealthy quality. As such curds is prohibited and majjige (buttermilk) is used, which can result in cooling of the temperature in the body. As such, Curds is avoided in this month. ———————————————————————————————- 3rd month – KSHEERA VRATHA–Bhadrapada Shudda Ekadashi to Ashwayuja Shudda Dashami- During this period, milk should not be used in any form or manner while preparing naivedya. This new gross would contain ushnaamsha of the bhoomi. As the cows would be eating the gross, the ushnaamsha in the milk will be more. We may be surprised at this. The gross do have different categories, one is shunti hullu. If the cow eats this gross, even the milk would have the smell of shunti. Similarly in the other gross also, the same effect would be there. Further, the cows which are involved in mithuna kriya during the previous period, would have conceived. The milk from the cows which are just conceived are not helpful for our body. As such, milk is prohibited during this month. =============================================================================4th MONTH – DVIDALA VRATHAAshwayuja Shudda Ekadashi to Karthika Shudda DashamiDuring this period, one should avoid DvidaLaas and bahu-bIja vegetables.DvidaLa refers to any seed or vegetable which when broken or fried splits into two halves. Please check with you local calendars for precise times Significance: The Ashada Shukla Ekadashi is a very important Ekadashi. This marks the end of Uttarayana and the begining Dakshinayana. Also marks the begining of festival season. Chaturmasya Vratams begin from this day. Taptha Mudra Dharana on this day is very significant for both physical, and spiritual health. The main diety for this Ekadashi is Vamana roopi Sri Hari. People worship him especially with lotus flowers. This Ekadashi is also called Shayani as Sri Hari enters yoga Nidra for the next six months. On kalAmAtrasAdhanI dwadashi complete pooja, naivedya before sunrise and exactly at Sunrise take apOshNa and perform pAraNe. Practice: It is said in Puranas that no other tithi is better than the tithi for this Shayani ekadashi. On this day we worship Shanka Chkra dhari Sri Hari as Vamana roopi. Complete fasting, with Jagarne and Hari pooja. People who do all three are dearest to Sri Hari. Even a dog eating person, who does this ekadashi vratam becomes dear to Sri Hari. This marks the begining of ChaturmAsya. During Chaturmasya people donate lamps(Deepdaana), eat food on Muttala leaves, sleep on the floor, Vrat and Upvaas are dear to Sri Hari during this four months. shakavrata sankalpa mantra: vAsudEva shuchow mAsE shAkavratamanuttamam | tvat prItyarthaM karIShyEhaM nirvighnM kuru mAdhava || EkAdasyA vratEnaiva pramAn pApEnaiva vimuchyatE | kartavyA, sarvadA rAjan vismartavyAn karhichit || on Ekadashi day fasting results in all sins being washed away. All the darkfortnight Ekadashis are very dear to Sri Krishna. Story from Purana ( Padma Purana ) Just by listening to this Sri Hari's mahima all the sins will be washed away. In tretayuga Bali was great asura emperor. He was a great devotee of Sri Hari and worshipped Him by doing yagna, yaga and vrats. on the same line the devendra who had lost his position was also worshipping Sri Hari along with his acharya Brhaspathi. Pleased by both their requests Sri Hari took Vamana avtar and came to the earth for the fifth time. Bali Chakravarthy gladly gave away three steps of land to vatu Vamana. At that instance Sri Hari took the trivikrama form and grew into the Universal form that spread throughout the universe. The Feet covered the Bhooloka and the kness covered the Bhuvarloka and all other lokas were covered up to his waist.Maharloka was covered by his abdomen, chest covered the jana loka, tapoloka was covered by neck, satya loka by face..all the heavenly bodies like planets, stars etc., became part of him. Thus he covered the universe with three foot lengths and covered Emperor Bali's back with the half foot, which made Bali to go all the way to the Rasatala. On the day of Ashada Shukla, Shayani ekadashi one of Sri Hari's murthy will be with emperor Bali, the other murthy will be on the back of Sri Adishesha in the milky ocean till KArtika masa. Thus from Shayni ekadashi day to kArtika Shukla's prabhodhini ekadashi this second murthy will be sleeping in the middle of the milky ocean. This period is called Chaturmasya. All the vrtas, pooja etc., during this time are very auspicious. This day when Sri Hari sleeps on Adishesha is called Shayani ekadashi. by listening to the story of Shayani ekadashi the benefits are equivalent to Ashvamedha yagna.. -from Padma Puran Part 3 Uttarakhanda 54th chapter explaining the significance of Shayani ekadashi. Whether Gruhastaas can give Tapta Mudradharana? Ans – No. Gruhastaas are not eligible to give Tapta Mudradharana. Those Gruhastaas who take Tapta Mudradharana themselves will not get any punya. It is just like Poundrika Vasudeva who got Mudra just to resemble Krishna, in vain. – Ramamruta Maharnava 5. When was the system of Tapta Mudradharana started? Ans – Once All gods including Indra were defeated by Vrutrasura. They went to Srihari and prostrated for help. Srihari told “Let all of you have Chakra Shanka symbol and fight with him. Just with the mudradharana all Vrutradi daithyaas would be killed and you will win”. All gods followed Srihari’s directions and they won. Since then onwards, all Vaishnavaas started having Mudradharana as it helps in win over enemies, it helps in winning Kama-krodhadhi arishadvarga. – Source Padmapurana. 6. Why one must have Taptamudradharane? Ans : Tapta Mudradharane is the “Vaishnavathva” symbol. Tapta mudradharane has a prominent place in Madhwa philosophy. In harivamsha – During Krishnavatara, Srikrishna had ordered that only those who have Mudradarane can enter Dwarake. Because of wearing Mudradharane – Power of Tamoguna – ajnaana, mithyaagnaana, will be removed, and through Shanka – Sathvaguna will be replacing tamoguna. 7. Chakra- Shanka – abhimani devate : For Chakra – Durgadevi; Shanka- Sridevi; Padma – Boodevi; Gada – Vayu. 8. From whom one has to take Tapta Mudradharana? lObhyaadhyupaadinaa vaapi yasmaat kasmaachcha pUruShaat | svayaM vaapi dahEdgaatraM chakrashaMKaadikairapi | sOpi vrajEta nirayaM saakaM svaguruNaa chiraM | One has to get Tapta Mudradharana from their respective Mutt Yathi only. As per Vishnu Rahasya shloka vyaakyana. It is observed from various Pandits of various mutts, that even though they have studied under various Mutt yathees, but they have taken Mudradharana from their respective mutt yathi only. Some of the example are : Pandurangi Anandabhattarakaru even after defeating many pundits and handing over the “jayapatra” (win certificate) to Vadirajaru, he got mudradharana from Uttaradimutt yathi only. Srikrishnavadootharu, even thouth he was one of the prominent bhakthaa of Raghavendra Tirtharu, his family members are getting mudradharana from Uttaradimutt yathi only. Even though, Sri Bidarahalli Srinivasaachar got the title “Tirtha” from Rayaru, he was getting Mudradharana from Uttaradimutt yathi only. LinGeri Acharyaru was the shishya of Yadavaryaru of UM parampare, but, he used to get Mudradharana from Raghavendra Mutt yathi only. There is another opinion – we can take mudradharana from any yathigalu, when we are in a far off place where no yathi will come for mudradharana or you are not in a position to go to his place. There is another opinion – We can take mudra from our gurugalu also, when there is no chance of getting mudradharana from your Mutt peetadhipathi. In view of the above. even though one must take mudradharana from the respective mutt yathi only. But taking mudra from other mutt pontiffs is also accepted as better to have mudra instead of not having it at all. 9. Sri Vadiraja Tirtha quotes in his Yuktimallika : – Mudradharana will be given by Acharya Madhwa only. In Agni he will be agninamaka and gives Sudarshana and shanka Tapta Mudradharana. There will be sannidhana of Acharya Madhwa in the Madhwa Yathi on this day. 10. Sudarshana Homa on Ashada Shukla Ekadashi – On Ekadashi day, there is no provision for annadana, jaladaana, and no havissu for gods. But on Ashada Shukla Ekadashi day, Sudarshana Homa to be done with chanting of Mantra only. Only Vishnu to be invited for the homa. 11. Importance of Mudradharana – some quotes : Those who scolds/disrespects the one with Mudradharana, would be getting the sin of disrespecting/scolding Srihari. One who does not have Taptamudradharana will not have Vedadyana adhikara. Even during antya samskara time also Tapta mudradharana to be done (by Mudra dharana) which will remove the fear of Yama and his servants. We should invite for Bhojana only those who has Mudra, lest it should be bhojana for pitru with mala mootra. As per Vamana Purana – the one who wears Sudarshana Chakra Mudra even for playing would get Vishnu loka As per Shivapurana – All those who are singing, praying the mahima of Srihari would be having Mudra. As per Skanda purana – One who has Chakradi ayudhaas, even if he has done so many sins, Yama will not come near him. The shareera which has Shanka-Chakra will be the home for gods. As per Padmapurana – Uttarakhanda quote – Shiva told Parvathi “Those who have agnitapta Vishnuchakra would be a Mahatmya. As per Markandeya Purana – Tapta Mudharana indicates the relationship between Srihari and us. It is similar to ladies wearing bangles, kumkuma, etc as the symbol of “muthaide”. Similarly those who have mudra would be recognized as “Vaishnava”. As per Matsyapurana – Vishnubhakta should have Chakra to his right shoulder and Shanka to his left shoulder, which would fetch him Vishnuloka. As per Skanda Purana – Even shoodras who possess Shanka Chakra symbol would get Svarga. Kanyadaana to be done only for one who has Mudradharana. As per Smruti muktavali – One who does sandhyavandana, japa, homa, etc with Ordhwapundra dharana, – he will not get any punya. Entire punya would be taken away by raakshasas. 12. Tapta mudradharana Mahatva can be found in various Granthaas:- “Skanda Purana”, “Vishnu Rahasya”, “Padma Purana”, “Sanaka Smruti”, “Chakrastuthi” of Sri Vadirajaru, “Yukthimallika-Phalisaurabha” of Srivadirajaru, “Taptachakra meemamsa” by Sri Vijayeendraru, “Ramamruta Maharnava” by Satyabhinava Tirtharu, “Smrutyartha sagara” by Chalari Narasimhacharya; “Smruti Muktavali” by Krishnacharya, “Nirnaya RAtna” by Chalari Sheshacharya, “Tapta mudradharana samarthanam” – Kundalagiri Acharyaru, “Vaishnava Deekshe” by Sagri Raghavendra Upadhyaya, 13.
