Ekadashi Mahatmya - IndiraAmong the several Ekadashi's in an year, Indira ekadashi occupies a special position. It occurs in Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha according to Southern calendars. It corresponds to Ashwina Krishna Paksha according to calendars of North India.
The greatness of Indira Ekadashi is brought out in Brahma Vaivarta Purana through a conversation between Bhagavan Sri Krishna and Yudhisthira. It has been said that this Ekadashi is a great purifier of sins. It even uplifts one's forefathers who happen to fall in Hell due to their sins. One begets the fruits of Vajapeya Yaga by hearing about the mahatmya of this Ekadashi. Narada-Indrasena Samvada In the Krita Yuga, there existed a pious King Called Indrasena. Once Sage Narada visits him and narrates an interesting incident. Sage Narada, who is sakala loka sanchari, once visits Yama Loka from Brahma Loka. There he sees the father of Indrasena serving Lord Yama. He happens to be thrown to hell due to a lapse in a Vrata he was performing. He asks Narada to tell his son Indrasena about his stay in Hell and ask him to uplift him by performing the Indira Ekadashi Vrata. Sage Narada explains the procedure of the Indira Ekadashi Vrata to King Indrasena. On the Dashami Day, one should make a vow before God that he will accompish the three day Vrata starting on Dashami and culminating with Parane on Dvadashi. On Ekadashi one should vow to fast completely without partaking even a drop of water. The entire time should be spent contemplating Lord of Indira by listening to Puranas and Sacchastra Pravachanas. Jagarane should be performed on the night of Ekadashi. King Indrasena accordingly performs the Indira Ekadashi Vrata. By the power of the Vrata, his father was taken immediately to the abode of Bhagavan Sri Hari in a Garuda Vahana. One who reads or listens to the greatness of this Indira Vrata would surely get cleansed off all his sins. He would go to the abode of Shri Hari without fail.
